Colloquium on Desert Cultures 2025

This year marks the 10th anniversary of a collaborative effort by scholars from diverse disciplines and institutions to create a space for reflection and exchange on desert studies. The colloquium has fostered academic publications, interdisciplinary projects, and the formation of the Multidisciplinary Network for Desert Studies.

SBS Mexico Initiatives is proud of partnering with the UACD in the organization of this wonderful academic encounter! Call for papers is open!

The 2025 edition brings together researchers from Mexico’s major desert regions—Sonoran, Chihuahuan, Central Plateau, Baja California, and Yucatán—as well as colleagues from the U.S. Southwest (AZ, NM, TX), and beyond. With participation from 15 Mexican states, 4 U.S. states, and 3 other countries, it stands as a unique multidisciplinary gathering focused on desert environments.

Key themes include biocultural heritage, archaeology, sustainability, desert ecology, migration, environmental crisis, cultural production, and economic development in arid zones. These dialogues bridge the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, with contributions from institutions such as UTEP and the University of Arizona.

Open to the public, the colloquium welcomes students, academics, artists, local producers, and regional governments from across the Northwest.
